  1. Attach painter’s tape to the wood tabletop and around the edges. Begin the first stripe in the center, and allow equal spacing between stripes.
  2. Once the tape is attached, secure all edges with your fingernail or a credit card.
  3. Dip a paper towel in the darkest stain (Kona), and lightly rub the exposed wood, moving with the grain. Wipe excess stain with another paper towel as you work.
  4. Carefully remove the painter’s tape, and set the tabletop on the old sheets or drop cloth to dry for at least 4 hours.
  5. Dip a paper towel in the other stain (American Walnut), and lightly rub the entire tabletop and sides, moving with the grain. Wipe excess stain with another paper towel as you work.
  6. Set the tabletop on the old sheets or drop cloth to dry for at least 4 hours.
  7. Lightly sand the tabletop with the 220-grit sandpaper carefully to avoid removing the stain.
  8. Remove dust with the lint-free cloth.
  9. Apply a light coat of polyurethane to the tabletop and sides with a high quality synthetic bristle brush
  10. Set it on the old sheets or drop cloth to dry for at least 24 hours.
  11. Repeat steps 10-13 at least two more times, but do not sand the table during the last round.
  12. Paint the table’s base a desired color, and allow it to dry.
